Event titled “Tackling landmines in the EU neighborhood: Evolving threats and the need for enhanced cooperation” held at European Parliament

Deputy Chairperson of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), Rapporteur on Azerbaijan, Croatian MEP Željana Zovko, AFET member, Polish MEP Anna Fotyga, another MEP Ladislav Ilčić, Head of the Mission of Azerbaijan to the European Union, Ambassador Vagif Sadigov, ANAMA Deputy Chairman Samir Poladov, Head of the Federal Administration of Civil Protection of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sead Vrana and Regional Director of UK-based Mines Advisory Group (MAG) Adam Komorowski delivered presentations at the event organized by the Sustainable Value Hub platform in Brussels.

The aim of the event was to address the many challenges faced by the EU member and partner states in this field, underline humanitarian demining efforts, examine the scale of the current threat through Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina example, and discuss prospects for future cooperation with the EU.

In the event speakers focused on the threats posed by landmines to the lives and rights of civilians, including children and women, long after the end of the war and it was noted that these casualties created enormous practical, social and psychological challenges for rehabilitation and reintegration.

At the end, the speakers answered the questions of the participants.

The event was attended by members of the European Parliament, representatives of various research centers, media and NGOs, as well as members of the diplomatic corps operating in Belgium.
